Aquatics Center Assistant - $15.00

SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor, this position is responsible for assisting the Aquatics Supervisor with:

  • Operating and supervising a clean, safe, and orderly admissions gate and concession stand by utilizing and requiring excellent customer service practices, safe food handling techniques, and approved cash handling procedures; and
  • Utilizing and requiring excellent customer service practices to monitor and assure the safety of Sapulpa Aquatic Center guests by positively enforcing Aquatic Center rules and regulations and performing first aid and lifesaving procedures.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Minimum 18 years of age by first day of employment.
  • Possess current Food Handlers Permit with an expiration no later than August 15, 2024.
  • Possess current certification from a nationally recognized provider for Shallow-Water Lifeguard, First Aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro) for adult, child, and infant with an expiration no later than August 15, 2024.

Desired:

  • Prior lifeguarding experience at Sapulpa Aquatic Center
  • Prior experience working with children, teens, and young adults
  • Prior food service and/or customer service experience
  • Prior cash handling and point-of-service (POS) experience
  • Prior supervisory/leadership experience

 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise and assist with the following responsibilities, e.g. water quality tests, swimmer counts, basic pool maintenance, power washing, and keeping pool, deck, guard break room, storage areas, and public spaces clean, orderly, and clear of hazards; and prepare entry area for opening, greet guests in a friendly, welcoming manner, articulate and communicate clearly, utilizing POS system, accepting payments, handling cash, credit, and debit card payments, providing correct change, maintaining entrance records, and completing “End of Day” reports.
  • Constantly monitor Aquatic Center guests, and supervise employees while doing so, in and around the water, during assigned shifts to ensure a safe environment for guests and workers. This includes identifying hazards, positively enforcing Aquatic Center rules and regulations to prevent accidents, and maintaining discipline, then utilizing approved first aid and lifesaving procedures when needed, regardless of an individual’s age, ethnicity, gender, or other aspect of diversity.
  • Successfully complete, supervise, and document required periodic swimming assessments of self and employees, and maintain personal physical fitness required to perform lifesaving procedures.
  • Respond immediately and appropriately to any level of incident or emergency at the Aquatic Center, including post-event reporting.
  • Assist with the inspection, preparation, proper storage, and approved use of facilities, lifesaving equipment, and recreation supplies.
  • Supervise concession stand tasks in a very fast-paced environment, e.g. prepare area for daily use, greet guests in a friendly, welcoming manner, clear communication while accepting orders, preparing orders utilizing standard formulas or provided directions, utilizing POS system, accepting payments, handling cash, credit, and debit card payments, providing correct change, maintaining inventory and sale records, and completing “End of Day” reports. May include utilizing city vehicles to pick up inventory.
  • Assist with and supervise janitorial tasks throughout the Aquatic Center during the whole day, ensuring safe and clean facilities including front office, guard break room, public restrooms, changing areas, showers, and pool deck. Will include tasks such as cleaning and correctly disinfecting counters, toilets, sinks, showers, etc.
  • Prepare and serve food in compliance with Oklahoma state and Creek County Health Department standards.
  • Clearly and kindly communicate Aquatic Center and Sapulpa Parks services, rules, hours of operation, programs, and special events.
  • Be alert and attentive at all times, aware of and reporting potential hazards.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Training and Knowledge

Training on these topics will occur at mandatory staff training before and during the summer season

  • Demonstrate cultural competence and sensitivity while interacting with coworkers and members of the public, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, creed, gender, national origin, age, disability, marital or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other legally protected status.
  • Ability to assess the appropriateness of staff behavior.
  • Enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures utilizing positive behavior management techniques.
  • Ability to assess and address potential hazards, including site, environmental, and food safety, while interacting with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safe food handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow city-approved cash-handling procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to initiate and participate in Aquatic Center Emergency Action Plans.
  • Proficient use and operation of equipment applicable to the position, e.g. POS, cash register, microwave, broom and mop, fountain beverage machine, sno-cone machine, food warming equipment, power washer, rescue tubes, rescue hooks, ring buoys, backboards, c-collars, automated external defibrillator (AED), and bag valve masks.

  • Display punctuality and preparedness, including arriving 30 minutes before daily opening.
  • Complete reports and paperwork by the required deadlines, immediately reporting discrepancies to supervisor.
  • Set an example by being friendly and industrious.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation, training, and staff meetings with a positive attitude throughout employment.
  • Flexibility in work week schedule, averaging 32 hours per week including days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
  • Timely communication with supervisor and employees regarding scheduling conflicts, behavior of employees or guests, safety concerns, water quality, accidents/incidents, etc.
  • Prompt attention to employees needing guidance in customer service, safety, behavior, etc.
  • Present oneself in a clean, hygienic, and professional manner that positively represents the individual, Sapulpa Parks, and the City of Sapulpa. This includes arriving at work well-kempt, wearing the required uniform, and utilizing applicable sun protection methods such as sunscreen and UV-rated sunglasses, a hat with a brim, or a rash guard.
    • CLERKS: Black capris or shorts at least as long as fingertip length, provided and unaltered Sapulpa Aquatics Center clerk t-shirt, and fully-enclosed shoes – no sandals. Per FDA Food Code, food service employees must keep their fingernails trimmed, filed, and maintained (no fingernail polish or artificial nails, unless wearing intact gloves, when working with exposed food); jewelry is prohibited, except for a plain ring such as a wedding band, while preparing food; hair must be restrained to prevent exposure to food, e.g. hats, hair coverings or nets, hair bands, braids, beard restraints, clothing that covers body hair, etc.
    • LIFEGUARDS: Bathing suits must be red, clearly, and largely labeled as “Lifeguard”, modest, and appropriate for high physical activity. (Optional) Short- or long-sleeve red rash guards, clearly and largely labeled as “Lifeguard”. Females: One-piece or tankini that covers the stomach when arms are raised. V-necks and other styles that don’t cover/secure the chest during physical activities are not appropriate. Males and/or Optional for Females: Board shorts at least 5” long that fit securely to the body when wet.
    • AQUATIC CENTER ASSISTANT: Can choose red or black Lifeguard uniform.

  • Physical ability to perform shallow-water lifesaving procedures.
  • Physical ability to carry and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds over even surfaces in extreme summer temperatures for 10 hours per day.
  • Physical ability to reach, stoop, stand, bend, kneel, and move freely in confined spaces for 10 hours a day.
  • Ability to meet City of Sapulpa employment requirements, including acceptable outcomes to background check.
